JADE REPLICA of Tikal´s Tomb 189 Jade Mask for Hasaw Chan K´awiil GUATEMALA JADE! Lord Quetzal MayanThis is a stunning reproduction of an actual museum piece called "Tikal's Tomb 189 Jade Mask Hasaw Chan K'awail"
http://www.authenticmaya.com/images/peten%20029.jpg
This mask was made in Guatemala from true jade. This piece measures 12 1/2 inches high by 9 inches wide by 4 inches deep. The mask sits atop a rough piece of jade with a metal pole which makes up the stand. This could be removed and framed if desired. The mask itself is composed of several pieces of jade put together like a puzzle just like the original mask. There are the tribal etchings in red to also replicate the actual museum mask. If purchased in Guatemala, this would cost over 00 not including shipping and the customs taxes you would pay. I'm listing for a reasonable price, below what I paid when I was in Guatemala. There is one blemish, one of the ears came loose, as can be seen in one of the photos. This is not a piece of jade that has broken but one of the cement seams that has cracked. It still displays beautifully and wouldn't take much to repair. None of the pieces of jade have been damaged in any way.
So who is Hasaw (or Jasaw) Chan K'awaiil (or K'awail)? Here a little history of this famous Guatemala figure....the King of Tikal:
One of the most celebrated of Tikal's rulers, Jasaw Chan K'awiil's reign came at the end of a 130-year long hiatus in Tikal's historical record, and his defeat of the rival Maya city of
Calakmul
in 695 is seen to represent a resurgence in the strength and influence of Tikal. Before advances in the decipherment of the
Maya script
revealed this reading of his name, this ruler was also known to researchers as Tikal Ruler A, or by the nickname Ah Cacao. Two structures at Tikal in particular are associated with Jasaw Chan K’awiil.
Tikal Temple I
is a classically Petén-styled
stepped pyramid structure
which served as this ruler's tomb, although it is presently unclear whether it was built for this specific purpose.
Tikal Temple II
served as the tomb for his wife, "
Lady Twelve Macaw
" (died 704).
