At auction is a rare, high grade, 1944D, silver twenty centavos coin. Struck at the Denver Mint, it was carried into the Philippines by the US invasion forces during World War II.
When the Japanese invaded the Philippines they took immediate control of the economy by confiscating all the coins and currency. They replaced them with Japanese Government Pesos. Possession of any other currency or coinage was punished by death.
When MacArthur returned in 1944, all Japanese money became worthless. This vacuum was filled with coins and currency brought by the Army, to re-establish the economy. The demand for these coins was extreme, so most were heavily circulated. Few of the original mintage remain, and of those, most are extremely worn. At auction is one of the handful that survived the last 77 years in high grade condition.
Look to the photographs I have provided. They accurately depict the coin for which you are bidding.
