    Description

This coin was minted at the San Francisco Mint for use in the Philippines which were a territory of the United States at the time. Because they were minted for use in a U.S. Territory, minted at the U.S. Mint in the United States and the coins say “United States of America” on them, many U.S. collectors are now starting to collect the U.S. Philippines coinage along with their U.S. coin collections. Even the Red Book of U.S. Coins has expanded their listings of USPI coinage, see pages 411-415 of the 2014 edition (407-411 of the 2013 edition). The 1909-S One Centavo is one of the better dates in the series with a mintage of less than 2 million coins and is in high demand. It is really neat to think that this coin was minted in the same building during the same year as the major U.S. key date cents, the 1909-S Indian Cent and the 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent. The coin here is a 1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Centavo which has been graded MS65RB by PCGS. Although the coin has been given the RB color designation by PCGS, the coin appears to retain nearly all of its original mint red color. I would estimate the coin is 99% Red and probably should be reevaluated by the grading company. The fields of the coin are slightly prooflike which made lighting the coin for photos quite difficult. I have provided alternate photos of the coin to help better show how the coin will look in hand. That said, the coin is much more lustrous and bright red in color than my photos show. The coin has no major marks or spots to note and is a very strong example for the grade, and especially considering the amount of original mint red that remains. An amazing gem example of this popular date USPI Centavo that would be difficult to beat.
